Why do you need to complete a FAFSA?
Since all Federal and College financial aid applications require that a FAFSA be submitted by each student, Qard Hasan Foundation is using the FAFSA as part of its application process.
What do you need from FAFSA to send with your college applications?
You need to submit your SAR, Student Aid Report, to the colleges you apply. You should do this even if you don’t think you will qualify for any loans. Some colleges require the SAR be submitted to be eligible for merit scholarships which are not on a ‘needs basis’. The SAR can be downloaded from the FAFSA site any time after you complete the FAFSA application.
When do you need to complete your FAFSA?
Each year a new FAFSA is available on or shortly after January 1st. You need to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible once it becomes available. The FAFSA requires your prior year tax return to file – for instance, filing for the Fall 2015 college school year FAFSA opened on Jan 1st, 2015 and required your 2014 tax return. Since you will not have filed you tax return in January, use your last filed return as an estimate and adjust it up or down as necessary. FAFSA lets you indicate that this is an estimate, and once you file your taxes just remember to go back and update the site with the correct information.
